Crockpot Oatmeal

I recently came across this recipe on about.com and changed it a little to suit us. I wanted to serve steel cut oats to my family for breakfast, but did not want to stand at the stove for 30 minutes in the morning. (If you are not familiar with steel cut oats they are very unprocessed and therefore very healthy and filling, but time consuming to cook. They are the oat groat that has been choppped. *Do not try this with regular oatmeal! Look for "Irish oatmeal" or "steel cut oats". For Knoxvillians: Nature's Pantry & Three Rivers Market sells them in bulk ie: cheap). You will wake up to a steaming hot pot of oatmeal-like your (imaginary) chef made breakfast while you slept...

1cup steel cut oats*
1cup dried fruit of choice (raisins, cranberries, apricots etc)
4 cups water
1/2 cup half & half

toppings to add before serving:
butter, sugar, honey, splenda, cinnamon, nuts or anything else you like!

Spray inside of crock pot with cooking spray. Combine all ingredients in crock pot and cover. Cook on LOW for 7-8 hours. Stir well, top and enjoy.

we love this. It's so easy you'd think I'd memorize it so I wouldn't need to look up the recipe late at night to get it ready for tomorrow morning! : ) But here I am.... Thanks, gals.

Could you use regular oatmeal with this recipe?
